We’ve got a few great places near our house where we can go for a romp and I love it when we do. We recently visited a local park that welcomes pooches as well as people, where I met another Aussie, a border collie, an mini-Aussie mix, a Golden Retriever, a terrier, a Labradoodle and what might have been a dachshaund/beagle mix and we all had a great walk on a beautiful day. There’s a sign at the park we go to that lists rules for visiting dogs and a wooden box full of plastic bags for cleanup.
There are a few rules of Dog Park Etiquette that apply wherever you go:
- make sure your dog is up-to-date on his/her vaccinations and has a valid license
- keep an eye on other dogs to avoid potential health or behavior problems
- always clean up after your dog
- supervise dogs when they are playing and interrupt any rough play
- think twice if your dog is not spayed or neutered
- never bring a dog that is under 4 months of age — it won’t have had all its shots and its not safe for it to play with other dogs
- don’t take your dog to a dog park if he or she is uncomfortable for any reason — find a place you both enjoy
- don’t bring or use treats and toys when other dogs are nearby
- don’t let your dog off-leash in an un-fenced dog park if he or she is not responsive to your verbal commands
- don’t spend your time talking on a cell phone – supervise your dog at all times
- Always observe all of the rules posted at your local dog park. Each town has its own set of regulations: please follow them
